About Us

Hi, we're Mike, Lindsay, and Echo — and we're in the middle of building the life we always talked about.

Mike spent years working as a sound editor in the film industry. I (Lindsay) taught preschool. We had good jobs, a life in California, and a shared dream we kept putting off for someday. Then the industry shifted, someday started feeling a lot like never, and we made a decision.

We bought a school bus.

Not a small decision. Not a cheap one either. But the right one.

The plan was simple: convert a retired school bus into our off-grid home, hit the road, and see as much of this country as we could on our own terms. No final destination to rush toward. No deadline to hurry home for. Just open road, wide landscapes, and the freedom to slow down and actually experience the places we passed through instead of just passing through them.

We left California, relocated to Arkansas to be close to family, and got to work. Then life did what life does: it surprised us. Our family grew, the build slowed down, and our priorities shifted in the best possible way. We've got a new co-pilot now, and honestly, the dream feels bigger because of it.

We're in Louisiana now, back at it, building away.

Meet Echo

Echo is a blue merle cardigan welsh corgi with piercing blue eyes, more personality than should be legal in one dog, and absolutely no concept of personal space. He was our baby before we had a baby, and he remains deeply convinced that he is the most important member of this crew. He has already seen the Maine coast, ridden in a backpack across national parks, and logged more road miles than most people do in a lifetime. He is ready for whatever comes next. Possibly more ready than we are.

Why Off-Grid

For us, off-grid isn't about roughing it; it's about freedom. Real freedom. The kind where you can wake up and decide to stay somewhere three more days because it's beautiful, or point the bus in a new direction because something looked interesting on the map. Most road trips are shaped by where you need to be and when you need to be home. We're building a life where the road itself is the destination.

We also have a bigger dream underneath all of this; somewhere out there is a piece of land that's going to feel like home. A place to put down roots, build something permanent, and call ours forever. We think the best way to find it is to go looking. All of it. Every region, every landscape, every climate. We'll know it when we see it.

The Build

Our bus is a 2001 International 3800 with a DT466E engine and more potential than any sensible person would take on. We're converting it ourselves, every weld, every panel, every system. It's unglamorous, uncomfortable, and completely worth it.

We document everything. The wins, the mistakes, the days where nothing goes right, and the moments where it all comes together. If you're thinking about doing something like this yourself, we hope this space helps. If you just want to follow along for the ride, we're glad you're here.

See you out on the road — Mike, Lindsay, Echo, and our new co-pilot 🚌
